How AIDeep Economics was built

An institutional read to understand the company's origin, evolution and growth logic.

AIDeep Economics combines applied research, data science and agricultural technology to build digital infrastructure, traceability products and intelligence systems for agri-industrial value chains.

Origin

The founding thesis

AIDeep Economics is a Uruguayan AgTech company founded by Dr. Gustavo Barboza Martignone, an alumnus of Harper Adams University (MSc and PhD) (Ex-Cargill-UK), with the academic support and mentorship of Dr. Dimitrios Papadias and Prof. Karl Behrendt. From its inception, the company has positioned itself at the intersection of applied economics, data science and agricultural technology, driving DeepTech solutions oriented toward the sector's digital transformation.

The initiative was born in 2023 with the purpose of promoting R&D&i projects in AgriTech Economics, articulating capabilities across agri-industry, public agencies and international research institutions. Its focus centers on advanced traceability, risk management and the generation of economic intelligence applied to agriculture.

Validation

The first test at sector scale

In 2024, the ArroTrack project was selected and secured funding through the Technology Promotion Fund (INIA FPTA 2023), aimed at developing and implementing a national traceability system for rice that integrates environmental certification and carbon footprint calculation. The project is led by AIDeep through the signing of a Consortium Agreement together with collaborators such as Tenet, GIS514 and Casarone Agroindustrial, and also has the support of the Asociación de Cultivadores de Arroz (ACA).

Scale

Platform, products and new verticals

In 2025, with the backing of Harper Adams University and FADISOL, AIDeep secured its second round of funding (INIA-FPTA 2024) to create the AgroTrack360 Unified Digital Traceability Platform, broadening its scope toward rainfed systems and incorporating crops such as soybean, wheat, maize and rapeseed in Uruguay. Within this architecture, the concept of Grain ID is introduced: a digital passport and digital twin of the grain that consolidates certifications, production events and environmental records through blockchain technologies.

That same year, AIDeep Economics and Harper Adams University, with the support of the Asociación Rural del Uruguay (ARU), FISCROP UK and Plaza Rural, obtained approval and funding for the third INIA-FPTA. AgriShield, a DeepTech system that combines advanced econometrics with Deep Learning models to anticipate volatility and price shocks in meat markets, turns uncertainty into actionable intelligence for producers and meat processors.

In parallel, in collaboration with Harper Adams University, the IICA and Grupo Barros Seguros, the company consolidated its positioning as an Insurance Tech through the AgroSmartRisk initiative. This platform integrates satellite remote sensing, spectral index analysis and climate variables to monitor production risks in real time, enabling index-based parametric insurance automated through smart contracts.

Consolidation

Restructuring, alliances and institutional network

In late 2025, AIDeep began a strategic restructuring process, formalizing its profile as an AgTech & DeepTech start-up. During this stage, the company signed a strategic technological collaboration alliance with SERVAG, an agri-tech firm of agronomic services and applied R&D, specialized in field trials and validation of agricultural technologies, within the framework of developing parametric yield insurance.

In line with this consolidation and growth process, the Universidad Tecnológica del Uruguay (UTEC) joined as a strategic partner and co-executor in the AgroTrack360 and AgriShield initiatives, strengthening the scientific and technological component of both projects through faculty, researchers and students focused on applied innovation in the agri-industrial sector.
