Rainfed agriculture (soybean, wheat, corn, barley, canola and sorghum) is a fundamental pillar of the Uruguayan economy, exceeding US$ 1.2 billion in annual exports. However, the sector faces a global paradigm shift: the most demanding international markets (such as the European Union) impose strict environmental barriers, requiring proof of deforestation-free production and a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. To remain competitive, Uruguayan producers need tools to measure, report and verify their sustainability.
